wedding tutorial: 'pimp your prosecco' sign
My friend asked me to make her some signs for her wedding so I thought I would make some tutorials. This was very simple to make, and you can use the board afterwards as a notice board in the house for shopping lists and groceries!
You will need
MDF board
I bought mine for under £3 at Chandlers in Liverpool on Allerton Road, but you can buy at most hardware stores.
Jigsaw
A helpful person to cut the MDF in half for you! (Thank you Ryan).
Sandpaper
I used the ‘Norton Expert 40 coarse sandpaper sheet, pack of 3’ from B&Q; you can order it here.)
Chalkboard paint
I used ‘Rust-Oleum Black Matt Chalkboard paint 750ml’; which you can buy here).
This paint is fabulous, I also used it for the kitchen wall, and every few months I chalk up a new mural. You rarely need more than one coat.
Paintbrush
Chalkboard pens
I used the ‘Zig Posterman white chalkboard marker pens’ in white with a 1mm and 2mm nib; which you can order here and here).
What to do
Start by measuring and drawing with pencil marks the size you want your piece of MDF. This will guide you when you cut it to shape.
Cut your MDF piece to size; I cut mine tall and narrow. Ryan kindly did this for me with his jigsaw (and now he feels like the man of the house…) The edges may be a little rough afterwards so you can use sandpaper to smooth them off.
Then simply paint both sides with the chalkboard paint. I did the front and the sides first, allowed it to dry, then turned over when completely dry to complete the back. (To save time you can simply do the front and sides, as the back won’t be visible once complete.)
I finished by doing one final coat on the front. As you paint try to keep your strokes in one direction as they will be visible when the paint dries. I finish up by wetting my paintbrush and running it up and down from top to bottom all over the board so that the strokes are even.
Finish by decorating with your chalkboard pens. I painted a ‘PIMP YOUR Prosecco’ sign to accompany the delicious prosecco table at the wedding, but you can decorate as you like.
If you want inspiration for ‘Pimp Your Prosecco’ stands, I have pinned plenty on Pinterest (click here.)
I’d love to see your own chalkboard designs, please feel free to comment below and share!
