homemade halloween spider costume

our toddler loves nursery rhymes, so last year we decided to dress her up as the ‘incy wincy spider’… she was quite frankly the cutest spider ive ever seen and her dad attended sellotaped to a matching ‘water spout’

what you will need

FOR YOUR SPIDER

black hoodie and joggers; I found ours at h&m

black wellington boots

a black beanie hat (again it came from h&m and was inexpensive)

white felt

fabric scissors

black felt roving and felting needle

white and black thread (and needle)

black wire (I picked some up in ‘abakhans’ in liverpool, but try any craft store)

two metres of black furry string for legs (available here)

a lacy white umbrella … the web. (try searching for bridal party brollies; we found ours for around £3 at claires accessories of all places)

for your spout

white card

scissors

mini glue gun

1 metre length outdoor pipe insulation (i found ours here)

scraps of cardboard (i simply cut up an old delivery box)

grey paint

tulle blue fabrics (or gauze fabric) to spurt from the top of your water spout (any fabric store)

creating your spider

  1. cut 8 circular eyes from your white felt sheets - two larger and six slightly smaller circles will be needed.

  2. needle felt a black pupil onto each white circle (this was the most time consuming part of the whole project, but took under an hour).

  3. using your white thread backstitch each eye onto the front of your beanie hat (practice with placement before you stitch each one).

  4. for the legs I simply trimmed my 2 metres of black furry string into 4 equal lengths.

  5. wind the black wire around the string to give it some fixed shape (trim once wound around each full length of string). don’t forget to bend the edges over so there are no sharp edges!

  6. take each leg one by one, place it at the centre of the back of the hoodie and firmly sew it to the garment (it doesn’t need to be neat - you are using black thread which won’t be visible).

  7. wa-la … one cute incy wincy spider who just needs a water spout to climb.

constructing your water spout

  1. cut three thin strips of cardboard.

  2. paint each strip grey.

  3. once dry, glue each strip around your length of pipe insulation, spaced about 30cm apart - this will make it look more like a drainpipe!

  4. cut out the letters ‘S’ ‘P’ ‘O’ ‘U’ ‘T’ from white card.

  5. glue your letters along the spout.

  6. finish by stuffing some of that blue gauze or tulle fabric in the end of your pipe.

the incy wincy spider climbed up the water spout

down came the rain and washed poor incy out

out came the sunshine and dried up all the rain

so the incy wincy spider could climb the spout again
