dollhouse diy: embroidered cushion

you could ultimately create a mini dollhouse cushion from any small scrap of fabric, but the thing that sparked me to create this one was an unused eyeglasses cleaning cloth we had lying around, with a pretty ‘pinked’ finish around the edge and the velvety feel of the fabric.

you will need

scrap of fabric

embroidery threads (in colours of your choosing; there are plenty available online, but ‘dmc’ is a notable brand)

an embroidery needle

fabric scissors

wool stuffing (i use ‘carded white lambswool’ but ‘world of wool’ offer a range of fibres and fillings here)

What to do

  1. start by embroidering your chosen design onto what will form the front of your pillowcase.

i used a mixture of french knots, lazy daisy and backstitch to create the above design.

  2. i used a cleaning cloth so i folded it in half and cut along the fold to create two equal pieces of fabric (to form the front and back of the pillow).

  3. use pinking shears or small scissors to create a pinked edge (in my case i only had to do this along the two straight edges).

  4. place the pieces together with your embroidery facing outward.

  5. knot your cotton thread at the end (i used two strands), then beginning in any of the corners bring your needle upwards through the fabric from the inside ie. between the pieces to the front (embroidered side). this will keep your knotted end hidden within the pillow when complete.

  6. now backstitch along the edges, sealing the pillow sides together.

  7. leave a little space before completion (as pictured above) to stuff your pillow with wool before you finish sewing around the edges.

  8. stitch up the hole and knot off your loose thread.
