dollhouse diy: bathroom makeover
with iridescent bubble beads, handmade towels and toilet paper, this is marlows favourite room in the dollhouse
Handmade towels and Flannels
to create some miniature towels simply cut up a bamboo flannel and blanket stitch with white thread around the edges to prevent fraying. i just cut freehand, but for a 1:12 scale dollhouse you will want around 2” by 4” for a towel and 2” by 1.5” for a miniature flannel.
Wallpaper subway tiles
you can buy embossed subway tiles for the bathroom wall (and flooring too) from here. i opted to cover just two of the three walls as a bathroom feature and affixed the wallpaper sheet in the corners with sticky glue dots as i like the natural appearance of the dollhouse interior too.
miniature loo rolls
to create your own mini loo rolls simply use a few squares of your own toilet paper. cut a little rectangle of cardboard from the tube and fold it over on itself a couple of times to make a sort of triangular centre. then cut a long thin strip (freehand) from the toilet paper and begin rolling it around your miniature tube. its a little time consuming but worth it. glue a little dab when you reach the end so it doesnt simply unravel when you let go. if you find your freehand length of toilet paper overhangs the edge of the cardboard centre too much simply trim it once you have finished winding it around.
be prepared to have to make these frequently as marlow adores unwinding the paper and stuffing it in various places e.g the little hole inside the toilet! but hey! whats the point if not for imaginative play, im glad she gets enjoyment from my difficult toils.
Bathmat
i didnt have to do a thing to create a doll bathmat… i simply repurposed a round reusable bamboo makeup remover pad i already owned.
Bathroom furniture and decor
the freestanding bath, bathroom vanity unit and a similar toilet can be found at ‘pretty little minis’ (here, here and here respectively).
i used a single glue dot to affix a mirror to the wall above the sink basin.
the potted plant is also available at the same store, here.
and of course you can never have too many baskets in the home. this one was just perfect to function as a laundry basket for when her mice or doll family strip off for leisurely soaks in the tub.
top tip
if your little one is sensible enough you can place clear iridescent beads in the bathtub for faux bubbles. marlow can play for the longest time emptying the tub into pots and pans from the kitchen and other nooks and crannys she thinks of. granted i find them all over the place but its worth it to see her playing so imaginatively.
