simple painted cards for the non-artist

a simple card for my first little valentine

You will need

two complementary wooden animals or figures of your choosing (i opted for the ostheimer standing bear and standing bear cub). alternatively you could use two of the ostheimer geese; ‘goose head high

a fine paintbrush for details like the eyes and nose

a thicker paintbrush for the main coloured parts on your chosen animal

paint acrylic or watercolour (similar colours to your wooden figures)

a sheet of a4 card

letter stamps and ink (i found mine here)

What to do

  1. simply fold your a4 sheet of card in half to make a landscape or portrait card as best fits the wooden animals you will be placing.

  2. place down your two animals as if they were kissing one another or facing one another (for maximum sweetness).

  3. draw around the edge of the wooden animals with a pencil.

  4. remove the wooden figures and tidy up the pencil markings; if they have little noses or beaks etc add in these basic details.

  5. paint within your pencil marks in appropriate colours.

i started by painted a base coat in an orangey brown tone and then applied two darker tones of brown on top of that to add a little dimension.

if you are using acrylic paint make your brush a little watery (not too much) and you can dab the paintbrush all over with those darker paints.

  6. finish by using your darkest tone and just applying it where the dark points are on your wooden bears.

  7. add on little details in other colours, like the eyes and noses, using a fine paintbrush.

  8. stamp your message above your masterpiece using the letter stamps and ink. we used to call her ‘our little cub’ when she was growing in my belly, and it still makes me smile to think of how much she has grown.
