top movies of 2019
This year we have watched some pretty good movies and some awful ones! I'm not a huge television fan and if we do eventually emigrate, I'm still working on him to ditch the screen altogether and leave it behind… because let's face it we will be surfing our evenings away if we move to Oz, rather than sitting in front of a television set!
However we don't live in Oz, and some nights you can't really beat cuddling up on the sofa in front of a movie after a long hard day of work (for Ryan at least). So I've listed some of my top picks that I can remember from this year - I hope you enjoy.
Green Book
We both REALLY enjoyed this movie! Viggo Mortessen we have decided between us is the best male actor around. He's wonderful in this and it's all the more charming when you realise it's based on true events. Set in the sixties, it tells the story of an Italian-American who snags a well paying job chauffeuring an African-American pianist around the deep South. Definitely one of the best movies I saw this year.
The Town
If you are looking for an action-packed bank robbery -esque type movie - this is a winner. It's got Ben Affleck, Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm, Blake Lively and a whole host more famous faces. It was just the right amount of gritty, heart-warming and adrenaline inducing for me.
The King
I'm not normally a huge fan of medieval dramas, but this was one to watch. Timothée Chalamet (from my favourite holiday movie ‘Christmas with the Coopers') was - wonderful! He plays Henry V; a rebellious character who succeeds as King of England following the death of his estranged father. It's a kind of coming-of-age tale and you watch the character mature from boy to king as the story unfolds, and he is forced to deal with the politics of royalty.
Colette
This was my number one movie that I saw this year. I loved it so much that I've watched it more than once. It came out in 2018 and features Keira Knightley in a role as early twentieth century French novelist and actor - Colette. It reminded me of her role in ‘The Duchess’ (one of my all time favourite movies). If you like that - you'll love this! Both movies are based upon the lives of two women who were profoundly influential and strong-willed in their own times. Women who helped shape the world we live in today. Keira Knightley was magnifique!
The Lincoln Lawyer
This movie was released in 2011 - so how I've succeeded in getting this far in life without having watched it I do not know… I did mention I'm not a huge fan of television right? Without any spoilers, this tells the story of a criminal lawyer (Matthew McConaghey) who is hired to defend a young man charged with raping and murdering a woman. The story unfolds as the investigation and trial unravel, prompting the viewer to question the moral judgement of McConaghey’s role.
